You don't mention Facebook very much. What role do you think Facebook can play inside a companies social media plans?

I have explored potential use of Facebook fan pages for a few clients but the risk seems to always outweigh the benefit. One of my clients didn’t want to create a page and then only have a few people following the page. They thought it would reflect poorly on the brand. They had similar feelings around Twitter because their followers would be low at the onset. What do you think a good strategy would be for companies to put their toe in the water with social media but minimize the risk of creating a negative perception in the marketplace?

I don't completely understand this whole social media stuff but there seems to be major brands that are embracing it. I wonder though if it is more applicable to brands trying to reach out to younger audiences and less applicable to service oriented companies like mine. Great post though and added things for me to consider.

We have definitely found the Gen-Y market is far more receptive to these channels. In time though, the trend will spread to other markets as social media layers are integrated into other services.
